The decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a “mistake”, former head of Fifa Sepp Blatter said on Monday.
The following day, an ambassador for the tournament Khalid Salman said that homosexuality, which is illegal in Qatar, was a “damage on the mind”.
The Gulf state has also been criticised for its human rights record and treatment of migrant workers.
While the host country’s World Cup organisers have stated that "everyone is welcome", there has been speculation how Qatar secured the right to host the World Cup.
