Ukraine’s nuclear energy company has disconnected the Zaporizhzhia power plant from the power grid after Russian shelling in the area knocked out its main electricity supply.
Parts of the plant will now go into a ‘cold state’ with just 15 days worth of fuel left in reserves to operate the back-up generators.
A constant supply of electricity is key for the nuclear plant to avoid the possibility of a nuclear meltdown.
The latest disconnection of the power to the plant has renewed international concerns about the safety of a plant with calls for a protection zone around the plant.
