Lisa Montgomery was the first woman to be executed by the federal government in America for nearly 70 years.
The 52-year-old strangled pregnant 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett, before cutting out and kidnapping her baby in Missouri in 2004. The child survived and was returned to Stinnett’s family.
Her lawyers argued that she had been born brain-damaged and was too mentally ill to be executed. Family members say that as a child she was routinely sexually and physically abused by her father, and trafficked by her mother.
