The US Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that states cannot ban Donald Trump from running for President because of allegations that he incited insurrection.
The state of Colorado had barred Mr Trump from standing in its primary election to choose the Republican presidential candidate, arguing that Mr Trump was barred from being a candidate because he had incited the 2021 Capitol riot. However the Supreme Court ruled that the state had acted unlawfully, because only Congress and not individual states had that power.
Mr Trump is the overwhelming front-runner for the Republican nomination and looks likely to face Democratic President Joe Biden in November’s presidential election.
