The governments in Belfast, London and Dublin have condemned the unrest, with the US calling for calm as police used water cannons for the first time in six years after having come under attack on 8 April.

Saturday night, 10th April, was the first without major incident since Good Friday.

The lack of trouble has been linked to the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, although there were disturbances in Belfast and Coleraine on Friday night, hours after his death was announced.

While all Northern Ireland’s main parties have called for an "immediate and complete end" to the violence, they are divided about its causes.

Newsnight’s Lewis Goodall reports from Belfast.
