King Charles has told an audience in Nairobi of his "great sorrow and regret" over what he described as the "wrongdoings" of the British Empire during the Kenyan struggle for independence.
However, the King did not formally apologise for past abuses, which was a gesture many activists had called for.
On his state visit to Kenya, the King said the "wrongdoings of the past are a cause of the greatest sorrow and the deepest regret".
He also said he hoped to "meet some of those whose lives and communities were so grievously affected" by colonial abuses as Kenya marked its 60th anniversary of independence.
