King Charles and UK PM avoid supporting potential Commonwealth slavery reparations | BBC News

King Charles has told Commonwealth leaders "none of us can change the past" at a summit in Samoa, indirectly addressing the country’s history of slave trade and the discussion around potential reparations.

But leaders could commit to learning from history and "finding creative ways to right inequalities that endure," he told the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

UK PM Keir Starmer, who is also at the summit, also told the BBC the UK "can’t change our history", regarding slavery when asked about reparations.

Diplomatic sources have told the BBC a number of the Commonwealth grouping’s leaders want to start a "meaningful conversation" about whether the UK should pay reparations for its role in the slave trade.
