Japanese cherry blossom festival hit by Covid restrictions – BBC News

Japan’s cherry trees began their annual bloom nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. Cherry blossom – also known as Sakura – is the country’s national flower.

This year coronavirus restrictions mean that people are not allowed to get together for family picnics and tourists are not able to fly to the country to see the blossom.

People from all over the country normally come together to celebrate by visiting parks and throwing big picnics called hanami, and eating special blossom-themed food.
