Israel has carried out an airstrike on Beirut which it says targeted and killed the most senior military commander of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
Israel Defence Forces named their target as Fuad Shukr who they said he is also known as Hajj Mohsin and said he was the senior military advisor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, describing him as his “right-hand man.”
The IDF said he was behind a recent rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed 12 children and young people. Hezbollah has denied involvement in that attack.
There have been warnings that Israel and Lebanon may be on the brink of war and a major escalation of the conflict that began with the October 7th attacks in Israel and its war against Hamas in Gaza.
