The Mediterranean is once again a hotspot for illegal crossings and people smugglers.
The focus is on Lampedusa, an island that belongs to Italy but is closer to North Africa.
Thousands have been arriving there in small boats – often at risk of drowning.
BBC Newsnight were the first international journalists inside the island’s migrant camp since the recent surge in arrivals.
Newsnight’s International Correspondent Emir Nader reports from Lampedusa.
