Illegal migrant crossings to Europe via Mediterranean sea ‘more than doubles’ – BBC News

The number of people who have crossed illegally into the European Union (EU) so far this year has risen by 13%, according to new EU border agency figures.

It is 13% higher than the same period, between January and July, in 2022.

The agency said the increase was entirely driven by the number of people who arrived after travelling across the Mediterranean, which more than doubled.
