Hamas says 20,000 dead in Gaza as UN resolution offers more aid | BBC News

After days of argument over the precise wording, the United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution on the conflict in Gaza calling for the “unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance” but stopping short of supporting an immediate ceasefire.

The United States blocked demands for an unconditional ceasefire resolution, which was backed by most other nations. Instead the resolution calls for the creation of “the conditions for a cessation of hostilities”.

In Gaza the Hamas-run health authority said more than 20,000 people have now been killed by Israeli forces. A UN agency has warned that Gaza’s entire population is at risk of starvation.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by John Sudworth in Washington and Lucy Williamson in Jerusalem.
