Ex-captain of Afghanistan’s national women’s football team given human rights award – BBC News


Khalida Popal, former captain of the Afghanistan national women’s football team, has been honoured with this year’s Lantos Human Rights Prize.

She is one of three Afghan women to receive the international award, which was given in recognition of her efforts to empower other women.

Khalida reflects on the impact the Taliban returning to power after 20 years has had, with women now banned from playing football.
