Egypt’s rare coral reefs threatened by oil pollution – BBC News

One of the world’s few thriving coral reefs is under threat, with an oil terminal dumping toxic wastewater on Egypt’s coast.

As world leaders meet in the country to discuss climate change action at COP27, "produced water" from Egypt’s Ras Shukeir oil terminal is being dumped into the Red Sea every day.

The barely treated wastewater contains high levels of toxins, oil and grease, and threatens the survival of rare coral which offers hope for preserving ocean life as the planet warms.
