Ecuador’s President has declared that his country is engaged in an internal war with ruthless drugs gangs, after unprecedented violence on the streets.
Armed groups linked to drug cartels have launched a wave of bomb attacks and more than 130 prison officers are being held hostage by inmates in jails.
The violence began after a notorious drug lord escaped from prison. Tourists are being advised to stay indoors.
