Evidence of a considerable Covid death toll in China’s rural areas has been found by the BBC.
Some 80% of China’s population – more than a billion people – have been infected since the country scrapped restrictions in December, according to leading epidemiologist Wu Zunyou.
But in rural areas there are only sparse medical facilities and those who die at home are mostly not counted. There is not even an official estimate for the number of village deaths.
In the northern Shanxi province, workers in the funeral industry have attributed an increase in deaths to the coronavirus.
One villager, a customer, reported that at times the coffins have sold out in the area.
