Mary Simon, a former Inuit community advocate, has been officially sworn in as Canada’s first indigenous governor general.
"I will strive to hold together the tension of the past with the promise of the future," she said.
Earlier this month, PM Justin Trudeau named her to serve as the representative in Canada of Queen Elizabeth, the country’s head of state.
Her appointment comes as Canada grapples with the legacy of its treatment of indigenous people.
"We need people like Ms Simon because we need people who build bridges and bring us together," Mr Trudeau said at the ceremony.
