US President Joe Biden has warned Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to launch a military operation on the city of Rafah in Gaza “without a credible and executable plan for ensuring the safety of and support for the more than one million people sheltering there”.
Around 1.3m people, more than half of Gaza’s population, have taken refuge in and around Rafah. They have fled Israel’s ground offensive in other parts of Gaza. The United States has warned that a major Israeli offensive on Rafah could lead to a “bloodbath”.
