At least 12 people have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized in the English Channel on Tuesday morning, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.
It’s not yet clear how many people were on board the vessel when it capsized off the coast of Le Portel in northern France, but a large search and rescue operation remains under way.
More than 50 people have been rescued with many receiving treatment in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
It is the deadliest disaster this year in the Channel, which is the world’s busiest shipping lane.
