American jailed in Russia says he feels ‘abandoned’ by US | BBC News

An American who was jailed five years ago after going to Moscow on holiday has said he feels "abandoned" by the US.

The US government said Paul Whelan was wrongfully detained and accused of espionage.

Now, in a rare interview by phone from his remote prison, Paul has spoken of the ‘stress’ he faced after the US arranged two other prisoner swaps with Russia in the last year.

He called the decision to leave him behind a "serious betrayal".
