How a BBC journalist's family escaped from Ukraine - BBC News

A BBC journalist has been reunited with his mother and disabled aunt after people helped them make a 2,000 mile escape from Ukraine.

After Vitaly Shevchenko, BBC Monitoring’s Russia editor, spoke about the dangers the war in Ukraine posed to his family in Zaporizhzhia, two people who heard his story worked together to rescue his two relatives.

Following a 35 hour journey, that spanned 2,000 miles (3,218km) and crossed five countries, Vitaly was reunited with his relatives as they arrived in Reading.

They thanked Anastasia Cotton, who organised an ambulance to take his family members from their home to the Polish border, and Richard O’Doherty, who helped to drive them to Reading.
