Prince Philip pledged, when he was married in 1947, to give lifelong support to his wife. After Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952 he was a permanent presence at her side.
His sense of duty and service has been mentioned in many tributes, including that of President Biden, who offered his condolences. He said that the duke’s legacy will live on “through all the charitable endeavours he shaped”.
