1,400 dead in Gaza airstrikes – the humanitarian crisis – BBC News

More than 1,400 people have now been killed in Gaza, in Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes on the territory. Many of the dead are women and children.

Gaza’s only power station has run out of fuel and supplies of food, water and medicine are dwindling.

The Red Cross says if backup generators fail hospitals may become morgues.

Israel is carrying out a bombardment of Gaza following the surprise attack by Hamas gunmen that claimed the lives of around 1,200 Israelis.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jon Donnison in Jerusalem and Rushdi Abualouf in Gaza.
